BT break up will benefit broadband roll out
IPSE, the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self Employed, has today (Tuesday 29 November) reacted to Ofcom ordering BT to legally split from Openreach. IPSE hopes this decision will ensure a faster roll out of superfast broadband, and ultimately, a better overall service across the UK.
Jordan Marshall, IPSE Policy Development Manager, said: “The UK’s ever-growing self-employed population depend on a good broadband connection to run their businesses, but those in some parts of the country are severely hindered by poor coverage. These freelancers often work remotely and if their connection isn’t reliable, earning their livelihood becomes extremely difficult.
“To date there has been a lack of competition in the delivery of broadband infrastructure, meaning the UK has lagged behind its competitors. We hope this decision will ensure reliable broadband coverage in hard to reach rural areas, fibre products suitable for Britain’s smallest businesses and new ultrafast broadband services.”
