Research

PCG aims to be the principal and definitive source of knowledge about freelancing and self-employment in the UK. To this end we are developing a research programme which will tell the story of the 1 in 7 British workers who are neither employers nor employees.

As a first step in the research programme, PCG has commissioned the Small Business Research Centre at Kingston University to research the nature and size of the freelance marketplace in the UK. This work utilises existing data sets as well as original interviews with experts across a wide range of sectors: it offers an overview of who works freelance in the UK, and in what sectors. With this information as a starting-point, PCG hopes to be able to develop a programme of original research.

PCG also has extensive data about its own membership from its regular member surveys. The annual survey for 2008 is also currently in progress, and publication of the results is due in October.
