| Is social media an important tool for freelancers? |

Freelancers across the UK may have already embraced social media as an important aspect of their marketing efforts, but those who are yet to get on the bandwagon should consider the benefits that these sites can bring.According to copywriter and freelance professional Aubre Andrus in her latest post for Copy Blogger, there are a number of sites that stand out as being beneficial to freelancers in attracting new clients and helping them to build a name for themselves within the industry. One of the most useful sites that can significantly open up a freelancer's client list is Facebook, as it is the most popular social network and can also be used as a newsfeed to help individuals keep their clients informed about what they are up to. Stefan Drew, marketing expert and founder of stefandrew.com, also recently argued that getting the most out of social media is entirely dependent upon freelancers doing their homework and focusing on the right sites that will be used by their target audience. He noted: "The first question you have got to ask yourself is where are my audience? If I was advertising to young people, where would I find young people these days? Facebook. "Putting an advert in the paper will not reach young people - they don't read the newspapers." Secondly, Ms Andrus argued freelancers should consider using sites like YouTube, as a well-directed and thoughtful video blog can be a perfect tool to attract more business, helping freelancers to be seen more as a person than simply a faceless contact for their customers. Pinterest can be another useful tool to help freelancers publicise their projects, as image-based sites such as this allow a freelancer to be more innovative in how they interact with their audience. It could be especially useful for travel writers, food bloggers, tech reviewers or even web designers, as an image is said to speak a thousand words. Finally, Ms Andrus noted sites like Foursquare can be useful - especially for freelancers in the travel or restaurant review sectors - as it enables them to provide their followers with a link to the places they are visiting and reviewing.
