PCG publishes new edition of Guide to IR35
PCG has stressed the need for its members to take good advice on tax matters, or they could face thousands of pounds in an unexpected tax bill.

A new edition of PCG's Guide to IR35, the tax rule that governs whether freelancers are taxed as employees, has been published. The new publication comes at a key time following the Dragonfly case in which one freelancer unsuccessfully contested a £99,000 tax bill from HM Revenue and Customs.

Labour decisions hurting small business
Decisions made by Gordon Brown and the Labour Government have cost small businesses dearly over the past two to three years.

The choice to increase tax on smaller companies from 19 per cent to 21 per cent has led to an estimated bill of GBP 2.4 billion, according to bytestart.co.uk.

A collection of statistics from a UK consumer panel have stark ramifications for workers in 2009.

The figures, which show that almost six million workers expect to miss out on a total of GBP 3.1 billion worth of pay rises in the next 12 months, may even encourage a switch in career focus, tempting some to set up their own businesses.

The Bank of Scotland has launched a competition to find the best social enterprise or community business in the UK with GBP 6 million up for grabs.

As not-for-profit organisations, social enterprises invest all extra funds made back into the business or the community.
